Dr. Golan Gur, Principal Investigator

Golan Gur is a Lise-Meitner Fellow of the FWF in the Department of Musicology and Performance Studies, mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He serves as a Principal Investigator of the FWF-funded project "Proletarian Voices: Emotion and Tradition in the Austrian Workers' Music Movement".

 

He studied at Tel Aviv University (BA and MA, summa cum laude) and at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He completed his doctoral studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin with a dissertation on Arnold Schoenberg and avant-garde notions of progress in music history, published by Bärenreiter under the title Orakelnede Musik: Schönberg, der Fortschritt und die Avant-Garde. After the doctorate, he received a two-year British Academy Newton International Fellowship to pursue postdoctoral research in the Faculty of Music at the University of Cambridge. He held further research positions at the University of Pennsylvania’s Herbert D. Katz’s Center for Advanced Judaic Studies, IFK International Research Center for Cultural Studies, and the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. His scholarly work explores the aesthetics and cultural history of music from the nineteenth century to the present, encompassing research areas such as the Second Viennese School, the musical culture of the GDR/East Germany, music philosophy and historiography, music and labour culture, and Jewish/Israeli music.
